Even when configurations can be reused, permission settings and troubleshooting steps must still be handled per platform.

Clash for Windows

No longer maintained

Clash for Windows became a familiar part of many Windows workflows, and numerous older tutorials use its interface, menu labels and configuration process as a reference. However, development has stopped, so it should not be the first choice for a new installation. Continuing to use it may also lead to unrecognized configuration fields, outdated core capabilities or declining compatibility after system changes.

If the client is still installed, migration is not about mechanically copying the entire program folder. First record the subscription source, proxy-group choices and custom rules, keep a copy of the original configuration, and import them again in the new client. Handle the old setup only after confirming that the new environment loads and connects normally to reduce the risk of interruption.

Best for: Identifying existing legacy setups, organizing historical configurations and planning migrations; not recommended for new deployments.

LANE 06 / ANDROID

Clash Meta for Android

Clash Meta for Android is designed for users who want to use Meta-based configurations on a phone or tablet. The Android experience depends heavily on system permissions. If the client says it is connected but apps cannot access the network, check the current configuration, proxy group, VPN permission, app routing and DNS in that order instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app.

LANE 07 / ANDROID

Surfboard

Surfboard is an independent proxy client for Android that supports subscription, rule and policy management. It is not categorized directly by the original Clash, Meta or mihomo core, so importing a subscription successfully does not guarantee identical behavior for every Clash extension field. Check configuration compatibility first when using complex rules, scripts or specific protocols.

It is better suited to users who already understand Android proxy tools and can assess differences between subscription formats. Migration is usually easier when a configuration contains standard node details and common rules; if it depends on mihomo extension fields, keep the original file and test on a small number of devices before switching fully.

Best for: Users familiar with mobile proxy configurations who want to compare how different Android clients work.

LANE 08 / ARCHIVED

ClashX Meta

No longer maintained

ClashX Meta follows the macOS menu bar workflow, retaining the lightweight entry points associated with ClashX-style clients along with Meta configuration capabilities. However, the project is no longer maintained. For a new installation, compare maintained options such as Clash Plus, Clash Verge Rev or FlClash first. Menu paths in older tutorials may also differ from current macOS permission settings.

Existing users should first export or back up their configuration and record how system proxy, enhanced mode and proxy groups are used. Apple Silicon and Intel Macs require different package architectures; when switching clients, choose the matching build rather than reusing the old program file. After migration, also verify login launch behavior and system network permissions.

Best for: Organizing and migrating configurations from existing legacy macOS setups; not recommended as a first choice for new installations.

A client migration usually does not require rebuilding every rule, but subscriptions, configurations and system permissions should be handled separately.

Keep the subscription source and original configuration

Record the subscription URL, configuration source and proxy groups currently in use. If you have manually edited rules, save the modified copy separately while keeping the unmodified original. This makes it possible to determine whether a parsing failure in the new client comes from the subscription itself or from custom content.

Confirm the platform, architecture and installation method

Installers for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android are not interchangeable. On macOS, distinguish Intel from Apple Silicon; on Linux, verify the distribution's package format; on Android, the processor architecture may matter. Choosing the wrong file usually results in an installation or startup failure, not a configuration problem.

Verify a basic connection before restoring advanced settings

On the first launch of the new client, import only the basic configuration and choose one clear policy, then confirm that web access works. Restore DNS overrides, virtual network interfaces, app routing and custom rules one at a time. Adding too many variables at once makes the source of a problem difficult to locate.

Do not let two clients control the network at the same time

You can keep the old client during migration tests, but do not enable the system proxy, VPN or virtual network interface in both clients at once. After verifying the new environment, exit the old client and disable its launch-at-login setting, then check the system proxy status to prevent duplicate control after a restart.
